Q100529: 'License has expired' error message

SUMMARY

Foundry products are provided in a number of available license types and the most common type is a temporary or subscription based license. These forms of licenses are available in Floating, Nodelocked and Login (Individual and Teams) and eventually expire, resulting in access being lost to the product/s in question.

This article explains how to identify if the license in your Foundry product has expired and what are the next steps to take to get your license up and running again.

NOTE: If you are using Nuke versions released prior to May 20th 2025, and you encounter failed checkout errors when attempting to launch Nuke with a Team Login License, please refer to the following article:

NOTE: If you are using Nuke versions released prior to May 20th 2025, and you encounter a Licensing Expiry Warning in the Licensing dialogue, please refer to the following article:

MORE INFORMATION

Checking for expired licenses using the Foundry products Licensing UI.

When launching the latest version of a Foundry product, if a license isn’t found or is found expired, the Licensing UI will display valuable information to help identify the cause of the launch problem.

No license found for product on launch.

Upon launching Nuke/Hiero 13.2v1+, Modo 15.0+ or Mari 7.0+ you may be greeted with a window similar to the following. Typically, a No License found message means that the application was unable to find a license key installed on your machine, whether expired or valid.

NOTE: After two decades of 3D workflow innovation, we have made the difficult decision to discontinue Modo, following the release of 17.1. More information on this can be found here

Clicking More Information will display useful information on the state of any licenses that may have been found for that program while starting up.

Checking for expired licenses in older versions of Foundry products.

Katana and older versions of our products use a different licensing interface and will require different steps to check if installed licenses are expired. Most older Foundry products will display a licensing window very similar to this, when a valid license is not found:

To check if there are expired licenses, click the Status button in the bottom left. This will display an error log, scrolling down to the line starting with Reason for failure will specify why exactly the product failed to launch.

Checking for expired Floating or Nodelocked licenses using the Foundry Licensing Utility.

Using the Foundry Licensing Utility, it is possible to view which installed licenses have expired. This can be done by navigating to Licenses > View Installed and a list will display the currently installed licenses under different tabs.

If there are any expired licenses installed they will be viewable from the Expired Licenses tab and include details such as the license type, days since expiry and the days since maintenance has expired.
