Q100527: How to fix "Missing Host or Vendor Specification" in the Foundry Licensing Utility

Follow

SUMMARY

A floating/server license contains two lines at the top of the license file with information about the machine floating the license (the HOST line) and the vendor who the licenses are for (the ISV line).

If these lines are missing from a license then it won't be installed by the Foundry Licensing Utility (FLU) as it would prevent the server from making the licenses available on your network.

MORE INFORMATION

If you purchase a floating/server license for one our products it will include a HOST and ISV line at the start of the license like this example license for 3 floating Nuke licenses.

HOST <server_name> 012345abcdef 4101
ISV foundry
LICENSE foundry nuke_i 2019.1030 permanent 3 share=h min_timeout=30
max_roam=-1 start=11-feb-2019 issued=11-feb-2019 options=303
_ck=0ad85f993a sig="60P0453JT302Y37F2RKAYNW6F5EQ1R4HRD0WPWG22H5NXK1
QTNJX716T54H2G5UHT0S34Y9FYG"

When the license is installed by the Foundry Licensing Utility (FLU), the <server_name> field will be replaced with the hostname of the machine.  The license file on the server will look like

HOST licserver01 012345abcdef 4101
ISV foundry
LICENSE foundry nuke_i 2019.1030 permanent 3 share=h min_timeout=30
max_roam=-1 start=11-feb-2019 issued=11-feb-2019 options=303
_ck=0ad85f993a sig="60P0453JT302Y37F2RKAYNW6F5EQ1R4HRD0WPWG22H5NXK1
QTNJX716T54H2G5UHT0S34Y9FYG"

The HOST and ISV lines are required in order for the license server to float the licenses on your network as they specify the port to use and the hostname the RLM server should check against.  If the lines are missing then the license(s) won't work and you won't be able to run the applications.

FLU Error Message for missing HOST and ISV lines

If you miss out the HOST and/or ISV lines when trying to install a license with the FLU it won't be able to install the license and will produce a "Missing Host or Vendor Specification" error message

If you see this message, please try to install the license again and include both the HOST and ISV lines.

Error message from license server with missing HOST and ISV lines

If you manually install a floating license and don't include the HOST and/or ISV lines then the license server won't be able to run and the server log file will say "No ISV servers to start"
