Follow

SUMMARY

This article will explain how to remove any licenses installed on your machine by using the FLU, by manually locating the license file or removing an environment variable.

MORE INFORMATION

Removing old/expired licenses is beneficial in many ways. The situations where this guide could be helpful are:

  • You have expired licenses that you would like to remove.
  • You have recently renewed your license and would like to start a fresh install.
  • You want to point to a different server machine.
  • You have recently transferred your license and License Transfer Request Form requires that: "You must delete this license key from the old machine within 2 days of receiving the new license key."

This guide will explain how to remove your licenses both manually and by using the FLU.

Manually removing the license

The default paths where the licenses are installed are listed below. To remove the licenses installed on your computer please delete the .lic file from the paths below:

macOS

/Library/Application Support/TheFoundry/RLM/

/Users/<USERNAME>/FoundryLicensing/

Linux

/usr/local/foundry/RLM/

/Users/<USERNAME>/FoundryLicensing/

Windows

C:\Program Files\The Foundry\RLM\

C:\ProgramData\The Foundry\RLM\

C:\Users\<USERNAME>\FoundryLicensing\

Login-based licenses are saved as a token and stored in a different folder. To remove these, please delete the highlighted Tokens folder:

Windows: C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\Foundry\Tokens

macOS: /Users/<USERNAME>/Library/Application Support/Foundry/Tokens

Linux: $HOME/.local/share/Foundry/Tokens

NOTE: To remove any expired/old login based licenses, you will also need to de-activate the license on the machine, please follow the instructions in the following article to deactivate the license: Q100586: How to de-activate your login-based license

More information on this can be found in the following article: Q100523: Where are Foundry Licenses installed on my machine?

Using the FLU

The FLU 8 or above can be used to locate the path where the licenses are installed. To find the license location:

  1. Launch the FoundryLicensingUtility
  2. Click on Licenses on the left-hand panel then click View Installed1.png

  3. To find the license file for any products, hover over the product and click on it.2.png

  4. This will display the license details, the license file path is under License Install Location. You can click on this to open the file explorer to the location.3.png

  5. To remove the license, please delete the .lic file. By default licenses have the following file name:

    Nodelocked license - foundry.lic
    Floating license - foundry_float.lic
    Client licenses - foundry_client.lic

Removing the foundry_LICENSE environment variable

The foundry_LICENSE environment variable can also be used point to a client machine to a license server via the port and hostname information. This replaces the need for a locally stored foundry_client.lic that needs to be created on each client machine. This allows for easier management of licenses across a network.

If you are using this environment variable in your setup then you will need to also remove this to ensure that you have fully removed the licenses from your machine. The environment variable can be permanently removed for you specific operating system by using the steps found in the following article: Q100127: How to delete or unset environment variables

After you've removed the licenses from your machine you can install your new license. Instructions on how to do this are available in the following articles:

Q100027: How to install a floating/server license
