MORE INFORMATION
Below you can find a list of questions and answers about Nuke Individual and Teams licensing terms and conditions, migration process, authentication, administration and purchasing.
Terms & Conditions
Q: Will login-based licensing be available for all Foundry products? When?
A: We are rolling out login-based licensing one-by-one to all Foundry products. Nuke, Modo and Colorway are currently available, and Mari, Katana and Flix will be added in future. Please look out for future announcements about our remaining products.
Q: Can login-based licensing be used on collectives e.g. Production Collective; Education Collective?
A: Not yet. It will only be possible to use login-based licensing for collectives after all the constituent products in that collective have been made available for login-based licensing. Please look out for future announcements about our licensing for our collectives.
Q: I only use X product within my Collective license - is there an option to downgrade so I can access the new login-based licensing?
A: Please contact your sales representative to discuss.
Q: Do I need to have current maintenance to transition?
A: You do not necessarily need to be on current maintenance to transition to login-based licensing, however you will need to be running the product versions listed below (e.g. Nuke 14.0v1 or later) and that may require your maintenance to be up to date.
Q: Is login-based licensing available for render licenses?
A: Yes, Nuke render licenses will be available as Team Login Licenses. You can keep Nuke render licenses as offline floating licenses if you need to.
Q: What product versions are available with login-based licensing?
A: Login-based licensing can be used with:
Nuke / NukeX / Nuke Studio from 14.0v1
Hiero from 14.0v1
Hiero Player from 14.0v1
Modo from 15.0 for Individual Login licenses, Team Login Licenses will be available in future
Colorway from 5.0 for Individual Login Licenses, Team Login Licenses will be available in future
Q: Can I run older builds of my product(s) after I migrate to login-based licensing?
A: Unfortunately it is not possible to run older builds with login-based licensing, because the new licensing technology was only added to the products from the versions listed above onward. If you have a specific temporary need to run an older build, please contact us on licensing@foundry.com.
Q: Which plugins are available with login-based licensing?
A: Initially no plugins will be available. Ocula for Nuke 14.0 will be available at a later date and will be compatible with login licenses.
Q: Does login-based licensing change our ability to float licenses across multiple machines?
A: Team Login Licenses are Floating licenses that still work as a pool which can be used by any user within a team, up to the maximum number of concurrent users that team owns. They are not locked to specific named users.
Q: Does login-based licensing change our perpetual license rights?
A: Your perpetual license rights are unchanged by migrating to login-based licensing.
Q: Does login-based licensing change the geographic restrictions on our licenses?
A: Your geographic restrictions are unchanged by migrating to login-based licensing. For most licenses use is restricted to the country in which the licensee is based at the date of purchase, or in other countries when travelling or working on a temporary basis provided that such use does not exceed 70 days in aggregate in any rolling twelve month period or, in the case of any license which lasts for less than twelve months, does not exceed the number of days representing 20% of the term of the license.
Migration Process
Q: Is it possible to migrate some of our Nuke licenses to login-based but leave others on their current offline model?
A: For simplicity of future license management, we ask customers to migrate all licenses of a particular product (e.g. all Nuke / NukeX / Nuke Studio) to login-based at once, rather than operate a mixed estate. If you have particular reasons you need to operate a mixed model please contact your sales representative.
Q: Can I continue to use my offline licenses after migrating?
A: You are not permitted to continue to use offline licenses after migration. As part of the migration process you will be asked to certify that all offline licenses will be removed from the original machines within 2 days of receiving your new login-based licenses.
Q: Is this a one-way migration or can I switch back to offline licensing if I have issues?
A: You are permitted to switch back to offline licensing if you experience issues or your circumstances change meaning offline licensing is more suitable.
Q: Is it possible to trial the new licensing system before migrating?
A: It may be possible for some customers to trial before migrating. Please contact your sales representative to discuss your needs.
Q: Do customers already using login licenses (e.g. Nuke Non-Commercial, Nuke Indie) need to do anything?
A: No - your licenses will be migrated automatically to the new system. There is no change to your license rights or the way you access your product.
Q: Can I migrate a license from an organisation to an individual license?
A: Team Admins can reserve licenses for named users if you want to ensure one of your team always has access to a license. Please contact your sales representative to discuss any longer term transfer requirements you have.
Authentication
Q: After I sign in, how often do I have to reauthorize?
A: Once you sign in on a machine your user is saved and you won’t be prompted to sign in again unless you log out.
Individual Login Licenses - Once activated, the applications fetch a 37 day license and will automatically extend this when the application runs whilst connected to the internet. Team Login Licenses - After the user signs in and selects their team this preference is stored until they logout.
Q: What if I'm not connected to the Internet while the product is open?
A: Individual licenses can be used offline for up to 37 days from when they are activated. Once you reconnect to the internet and run the application again it will extend the license.
To use Team Login Licenses you need to be connected to the internet, if you roam a license you can then use it offline for up to 30 days. The floating license will remain checked out to that user until they return it to the pool.
Q:You can roam teams licensing but does roaming work the same? Can the team admin take back a roamed license or will it need to be returned by the user?
A: Roamed licenses are checked out from the pool for 30 days and refreshed each day when they use the license whilst online. The license is returned to the pool when the user returns it or they let 30 days expire.
Q: Do I need a high bandwidth internet connection to use login-based licensing?
A: No, login-based licensing does not require a high bandwidth connection.
Q: Can I access login-based licensing in all geographic locations?
A: Yes, it should be possible to access login-based licensing globally. However use of your products outside your home country is still governed by the same rules described in the End User Licensing Agreement.
Q: Can I install and run the product on multiple devices?
A: Yes. Individual licenses can be activated on up to two machines at a time. Team users can sign in and use licenses on multiple machines, up to the maximum number of concurrent licenses that team owns.
Q: Does every user have to have a foundry.com account? What does this entail?
A: Yes, every user will need to create a foundry.com account. This should take less than 5 minutes and simply requires the user to provide and authenticate a chosen email address.
Administration
Q: Who can access the teams panel (is it only the admin) and how do they do this, is it via the software or a browser?
A: Only Team Admins can access the OrgAdmin panel. A Team Admin can make other users into Team Admins if they need to.
Regular users can view the login licenses they have access to through the My Account section of the Foundry website.
Q: I'm the system administrator but do not use the software. Will I need to purchase a user license to continue to administrate?
A: No, the administrator simply needs a foundry.com account, which is free to obtain.
Q: How can a system administrator share licenses between users?
A: As a nominated administrator, you can upload a list of email addresses to invite new users into your team. Users then follow an activation link sent to their email address to create foundry.com account (if required) and join the team to get access to the licenses.
Information on how to use the Team Admin dashboard is available in the Licensing Online Help and on the Support Portal.
Q: How can a system administrator manage a pool of users e.g. leavers/joiners/temps?
A: The Team Admin dashboard, available from the My Account area of foundry.com, can be used to invite and remove users and organise them into groups if required.
Information on how to use the Team Admin dashboard is available in the Licensing Online Help and on the Support Portal.
Q: The org admin user is no longer available, how can I add a new admin?
A: If your nominated Team Admin has left your company and you cannot access the OrgAdmin dashboard, please raise a ticket with our Customer Support team and they make another user into a Team Admin.
Q: What if we have workstations with intermittent shared use. Will these still be restricted to a single user log-in?
A: All products require a single user log-in. For workstations with intermittent shared use we recommend continuing to use offline licenses. Please contact your sales representative to discuss this further.
Q: How often can a seat be reassigned to a different user?
A: Admin users can reserve Team Licenses for named users using the Team Admin dashboard, if required. By default team licenses are not assigned to named users. There is no limit on how often you can reserve or un-reserve licenses.
Information on how to use the Team Admin dashboard is available in the Licensing Online Help and on the Support Portal.
Q: If a user leaves a company but they have already logged in once and activated the entitlement, will removing the user from the teams panel be enough to stop the license refreshing?
A: Yes. Once the user is removed from a Team they will no longer be able to use or refresh the license.
Q: Can I access usage reports per user? What data is Foundry collecting on our usage?
A: Not at the moment, this is something we may look into in future.
Q: Is single sign on (SSO) available for enterprise license management?
A: This is not available at start, but is something we may look into in future. Please talk to your sales representative if you are interested.
Q: Can admins group users into custom groups to control access to different licenses e.g. across different sites or departments?
A: Yes, admins can use the Team Admin dashboard to create groups of different users and assign licenses to different groups.
Information on how to use the Team Admin dashboard is available in the Licensing Online Help and on the Support Portal.
Q: What is the difference between an Individual and a Team?
A: An individual is a single foundry.com account user. Individual licenses are only accessible and usable by a single account.
A Team is a representation of a company within the login licensing system. Team licenses are usable by any user within the team.
Q: How do I move my licenses to a Team?
A: Please contact your sales representative if you wish to move your existing license to a team.
Q: I am the System Administrator for our offices in different locations. Can I add all of these licenses to one Team? Or would I need to set up a Team for each office?
A: Please contact your Account Manager to discuss your setup and they will be able to advise
Q: Where can I find information on how to use and manage login licenses?
A: Information on how to use and manage login licenses is available in the Licensing Online Help and on the Support Portal.
Q: Where do I go to find help with login licenses?
A: Information on how to use and manage login licenses is available in the Licensing Online Help and on the Support Portal. If you cannot find the answer to your question, please raise a support ticket.
Q: How do team render licensses work with my render manager?
A: Team Render licenses work in the same way as floating render licenses. Information on how you can point render machines to your Team login licensing setup is available in the Licensing Online Help and on the Support Portal.
Purchasing
Q: Can I purchase a rental login-based license? If so, would these be daily, monthly or quarterly?
A: Yes, you can use login-based licenses for rentals. Most of our products offer rentals on a quarterly basis only.
Q: Will you offer a pay by usage model (e.g. per minute / per hour)?
A: We do not currently have any plans to offer shorter-term usage models.
Q: Will all login licenses be perpetual?
A: All login-based licenses will have the same access terms as the equivalent offline license, which may be perpetual or subscription term-based.
Q: Will I need to purchase yearly maintenance?
A: Your perpetual license rights are unchanged by the use of login-based licensing, so if you stop paying maintenance, you will still be able to access the product you purchased, but will lose access to future product updates and will no longer be able to request help from our technical support team.
Q: Can I get a RLM floating/nodelocked lic on request?
A: Yes, we will still offer RLM licenses for customers who want them.
