Q100599: Mari Support for macOS

Follow

SUMMARY

This article will explain the future of Mari Support on macOS.

MORE INFORMATION

After much consideration, Mari 4.7 will be the last version of Mari compatible with macOS.

The Mari team will continue to make maintenance updates for the macOS version of Mari 4.7 until the end of 2021 — any release after Mari 4.7 will not be compatible.

This was a decision made based on Apple’s move to deprecate OpenGL in favour of Apple Metal. While a great move for Apple users, spending the required time to convert Mari to Metal would impact its momentum and roadmap for all customers.

It is also important to note that no other Foundry products will be leaving macOS, and while Mari on Mac may be re-evaluated in the future, for now, the macOS version of Mari will no longer receive new features or support future Mac hardware. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

NOTE: Please note that there will be no impact on Mari's support for Windows and Linux.

Q. What is the final macOS version of Mari?

Mari 4.7 is the final version of Mari we shall release on macOS, we shall however continue to make maintenance updates for the macOS version of Mari 4.7 until the end of CY 2021.

Q. Why is Mari no longer going to be developed for macOS?

We made this decision as a result of Apple's deprecation of OpenGL in favour of Apple Metal. While a great move for Apple users, spending the required time to convert Mari to Metal would impact its momentum and roadmap for all customers.
We debated for a long while whether or not to knuckle down and make the transition or to end of life our support for the macOS platform. Unfortunately, it became clear that for the sake of forward development for the majority of the Mari user base, who use Windows and Linux, the appropriate choice was sadly to cease Mari development on macOS.

Q. Will Foundry also be ending macOS support for Nuke or Modo?

No other Foundry products will be leaving macOS, and while Mari may be re-evaluated in the future, for now, Mari is the only Foundry app to end support on macOS. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Q: Will Foundry be continuing to develop Mari for Windows and Linux?

Yes.

Q. I have just purchased another year's maintenance, can I get a refund?

For your remaining maintenance term, the Mari Team will continue to support all workflow and licensing related issues during your maintenance period. In addition, Mari 4.7 will receive patches for the macOS platform until the end of CY 2021.

Q. I’m on a Mari Subscription, if no new features come to macOS after 4.7, do I still have to renew my subscription to access 4.7 in future?

Yes, if you do not hold a perpetual license, then an active Mari subscription is required to access all versions of Mari, so you will still require a subscription renewal to access Mari 4.7 in the future.

Q. Does my subscription allow me to use a Windows/Linux version of Mari through Bootcamp?

Yes, your subscription license gives you access to all versions of Mari across all OS platforms.

Q. Can I transfer my node-locked license to a Windows/Linux machine?

Yes, please contact licenses@foundry.com who will help you transfer your license.

Q. Can I transfer my node-locked license to a floating license server?

Yes, please contact licenses@foundry.com who will help you transfer your license.

Q. Can I transfer my node-locked license to a login/based license?

This is unfortunately not possible at the moment
