Q100574: Nuke CUDA Error: ptxas fatal when using GPU accelerated nodes

Follow

SYMPTOMS

When using GPU accelerated nodes, such as the Kronos node, you may encounter an error message at the top of the Viewer that looks like the following:

CUDA Error: Unknown error code:218ptxas application pxt input, line 9; fatal  : Unsupported .version 6.4; current version is ‘6.1’ptxas fatal   : Ptx assembly aborted due to errors

NOTE: The numbers in bold may vary.

CAUSE

This error message is caused by not having the CUDA version needed for Nuke to use GPU accelerated nodes, which comes bundled as part of the Nvidia driver. Nodes which do not have the Use GPU if available knob are not GPU accelerated, so will not encounter this issue.

For the latest information about the current CUDA version and GPU drivers needed, please refer to our Nuke tech specs.

RESOLUTION

Updating the driver for your Nvidia GPU should correct the issue.

As of Nuke 15.1, the minimum driver versions needed for GPU acceleration are 520.61.05 on Linux or 522.06 on Windows. For more information on Nuke's required driver versions, please see the following section of the Nuke 15.1 Release Notes: Requirements for Nuke's GPU Acceleration

We generally recommend using the latest GPU drivers, and the most recent Nvidia GPU drivers can be downloaded from the Nvidia website: NVIDIA Driver Downloads
