Q100546: Scaling Modo for 4k / High DPI monitors on Windows 10/11

Follow

SYMPTOMS

When using Modo on a 4k / High DPI monitor, the UI scaling may not conform to the scaling set in the Windows display setting.

Modo’s UI may appear too small on a 4k / High DPI monitor to use satisfactorily:

CAUSE
Modo does not currently support 4k / High DPI monitors.

The request for native 4k / High DPI monitors to be supported has been logged and is under review with the Modo product team.

RESOLUTION

To make the Modo UI more readable on 4k / High DPI monitors, you must change your Windows 10/11 display setting and then, in Windows 10, set the Modo application to conform to the OS display setting.

PLEASE NOTE: Since Modo will be scaled by Windows and not by itself, the Modo UI may appear to have minor blurring.

METHOD

First, you must set your Windows display settings correctly:

  1. Open your Windows Settings menu and navigate to the System settings.
  2. Navigate to the Display settings, and select your 4k monitor.
  3. Under the Scale and layout heading, and set the magnification size to 200%. This will scale the Windows UI to better fit a 4K / High DPI monitor.

On Windows 11, Modo should automatically conform to the new scaling settings. If it does not resize automatically, or you are using Windows 10, please continue to the next steps.

Now you must set the Modo application to conform to the Windows 10 display scaling setting.

  1. Right-click the Modo shortcut and select Properties.
  2. Switch to the Compatibility tab, then click the Change high DPI settings button.
  3. Tick the box under High DPI scaling override, then change the option from Application to System. This will force Modo to use the Windows 10 display scaling setting.
  4. Confirm the changes by selecting OK. Relaunch the Modo application and the UI should now be scaled on the 4k / High DPI monitor.

Once this is done, the Modo UI will display on your 4k monitor as shown below:

Please note that there can be issues when using two monitors with different display scaling values.
