Q100375: How to fix the "Invalid UMSID" error with Login-based licensing

When trying to activate a login-based licence you may receive the error message "Invalid UMSID" as shown in the screenshot below:

The UMSID is the unique identifier that the login-based licensing website uses to recognise your machine.  The UMSID depends on several bits of information about your machine, including the hostname, IP address and SystemID.

When an activated machine checks back in with the login-based licensing website, the website checks that the UMSID in the license request matches what is stored for the currently activated devices.  If the UMSID of your machine has changed for any reason (this can happen with some network or hardware changes) then the machine will appear to not be valid and you'll see the error above.

You can fix this problem by reactivating the license on the machine by doing the following steps:

  1. First of all please deactivate any devices that your entitlement is registered to by following the instructions below:
Q100284: How to deactivate a Modo Subscription or Modo with Maintenance License

  2. Then delete the contents of the FoundryLicensing directory in your home area.  The default location for this is:

    Windows C:\Users\<USERNAME>\FoundryLicensing\
    OSX: /Users/<USERNAME>/FoundryLicensing/
    Linux: /Users/<USERNAME>/FoundryLicensing/

(Where <USERNAME> is your log in name)

  3.  Reactivate your log-in based licence by following the steps below:

If you still cannot launch and activate the program after completing the steps above then please open a Support ticket and let us know the issue you are encountering and the troubleshooting steps you have taken so far.
