Q100166: How to resolve playback performance issues by disabling PulseAudio

Follow

SYMPTOMS

If your project is set up for real time playback but you are experiencing intermittent playback instead of the expected FPS, this may be related to third party software called PulseAudio.

RESOLUTION

PulseAudio is known to cause issues with real time playback in Nuke Studio and Hiero and, if Nuke Studio/Hiero detects that you are running it on your system, the following warning will be displayed on startup:

If you are experiencing playback performance issues, then we recommend disabling this program. One of the key identifiers that PulseAudio is part of the cause, is that the audio icon (highlighted in the screenshot below) will flash between grey and red during playback:

This issue appears to be most prevalent on Linux machines, but other operating systems can also be affected by having PulseAudio installed. For more information on how to disable PulseAudio, please refer to the PulseAudio on Linux section of Nuke's documentation.
