SUMMARY
The GoZ plug-in for Modo allows you to automatically transfer models between Modo and ZBrush. The newest GoZ plug-in developed by Foundry supports Modo 10.2 onwards only. If you are using the Foundry developed version of the GoZ plug-in, you may need to configure the GoZ plug-in to ensure it is working correctly.
This article will cover how to configure the GoZ plug-in for Modo 10.2 onward.
MORE INFORMATION
Clean Installation
If you have recently updated ZBrush or Modo, this can sometimes introduce disparities in the installed files and break the GoZ plug-in, resulting in unexpected functionality such as Script execution failed
error messages for some necessary python files.

In order to assure that the necessary files for GoZ are functioning correctly, it's recommended that you remove ZBrush, Modo and GoZ from your machine and then reinstall the applications in the following order:
- Zbrush
- Modo
- GoZ
Reinstalling the involved applications can often be the quickest way to ensure you don’t have legacy files impairing the functionality of your GoZ plugin, and means you don’t have to go in to the application files by hand.
After reinstalling the applications, we advise that you check the necessary files are installed on your machine before using the GoZ plug-in. You will find instructions for this step below:
Ensuring you have the necessary files
If you are having problems with the GoZ transfers, it can help to make sure you have the files you require, as well as ensuring that you delete any legacy files (as explained in the previous section).
Please make sure you are also using our latest GoZ plugin, which is v1.2. To uninstall our plugin before reinstalling it, please delete the folders referenced below in the Foundry Plugin Files section below.
The GoZ specific files are as follows:
-
ZBrush installation files. There are some necessary files that are included with your ZBrush installation required to make GoZ transfers work for all applications that support GoZ. The required files are:
- GoZ.zsc
- GoZDLL.dll (or GoZ.lib for macOS)
Both of these files should exist in your ZBrush installation folder, found here:
Windows:C:\Program Files\Pixologic\ZBrush [version]\ZData\ZPlugs64
macOS:Applications/ZBrushOSX [version]/ZData/ZPlugs64
If you don’t have these files, please reinstall the ZBrush application with plugins.
-
Foundry Plugin Files. The GoZ plugin developed by Foundry installs to 2 locations. These are:
1. A folder titled GoZ created in your Modo Kits folder. The GoZ folder should contain 14 files and 4 folders. Below is the full path for the GoZ folder:
Windows:C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\Luxology\Kits
macOS:/Library/Application Support/Luxology/Content/Kits/GoZ
PLEASE NOTE: The GoZ installer prompts to create the GoZ folder by default at the following location on Windows:C:\Users\[Username]\Documents\Luxology\Content\Kits\GoZ
The installation of the plugin must be instead changed to the following path on Windows:C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\Luxology\Kits
2. A folder titled modoKit created in your ZBrush GoZApps folder. The modoKit folder should initially contain 3 files, with a 4th file being created automatically once you have set up your path in ZBrush. Below is the full path for the GoZApps folder:
Windows:C:\Users\Public\Pixologic\GoZApps\
macOS:/Users/Shared/Pixologic/GoZApps
If no new files appear inside your modoKit folder (GoZ Apps > modoKit), please follow the Readme file inside your Modo Content/Kits/GoZ folder
to add them.
The next step is for you to launch Zbrush and set up the Modo path for GoZ by following the instructions below:
Setting the Modo path in ZBrush
When setting up the GoZ plug-in, you must ensure you are using the correct Modo path in ZBrush for your version of Modo.
If you are using Modo 10.2 onward, you must set GoZ to the path Modo (New).
To change the already set Modo path in ZBrush, navigate to Preferences > GoZ and select "path to Modo (New)". If you have multiple versions of Modo installed on your machine, ZBrush will ask you to select a specific Modo application.

Please also check that Modo (New) is chosen as your current application in ZBrush for the transfer process.
To check this, please click on the R button that can be found alongside the GoZ buttons panel in the ZBrush interface as below, and ensure Modo (New) is highlighted and has (current) appended.

Removing unnecessary files created by the old GoZ plug-in (pre Modo 10.2)
It is also recommended that you remove certain files created by the old version of the GoZ plug-in that are unnecessary when using Modo 10.2 onward, to ensure they are not causing any conflict with the new GoZ plug-in.
This step is only necessary if you have installed the old GoZ plug-in beforehand, otherwise the files referenced below will not have been created.
PLEASE NOTE: Please do not delete:
- files from your GoZApps folder
- the GoZ.zsc or GoZDLL.dll (GoZ.lib for OS X) files from your ZBrush installation.
To remove an old version of GoZ, you will need to delete 2 files: the GoZ_Cat[Modo
version].cfg
and the gozio.lx
files.
- First, ensure that all versions of ZBrush and Modo are closed on your machine. Then, delete the
GoZ_Cat[Modo version].cfg
file, found in the directories listed below.
Windows:C:\Program Files\Foundry\Modo\901\resrc\GoZ_Cat901.cfg
macOS: Navigate to the Modo application in your Applications folder, then right-click and select Show Package Contents. From here, go toContent/Resources/GoZ_Cat901.cfg
- The next file is the
gozio.lx
file. This is found in the following directories:
Windows:C:\Program Files\Foundry\Modo\901\extra\gozio.lx
macOS: Navigate to the Modo application in your Applications folder, then right-click and select Show Package Contents. From here, go toContent/Extras/gozio.lx
PLEASE NOTE: [Modo version] refers to the version number of Modo. In the examples above, Modo 901 is used to demonstrate the directory this file is stored in. Please do not forget to change the file path to reflect the version of Modo you may be using.
